Chance to improve Cycle regulations & Laws - Govt Red Tape Challenge

From the 20th May to the 17th June the Government will be taking responses on the Road Transportation section of the 'Red Tape Challenge'. This is an exercise which seeks views on current regulations, allowing individuals and organisations to suggest to the Department for Transport (DfT) which regulations need to be relaxed or improved.

Although regulation is often vital to ensure the safe and equitable operation of the road network, in other cases regulation is harmful to the promotion of cycling.

British cycling is urging members to suggest changes to rules relating to road racing

The CTC are making the same suggestion plus a few others relating to:
use of paths & bridle ways down south
pedal reflectors
cycle lighting regulation
electric bike weight limits
use of zebra crossings
and more

The deadline to respond to this is today

The Government’s response to its Red Tape Challenge was published this week. Although the report contains few details, CTC is pleased to see that is has agreed to our proposed changes to some of the regulations affecting cyclists.  These include the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle Regulations and the Pedal Bicycles (Safety) Regulations. The Cycle Racing on the Highways Regulations are to be revised in consultation with British Cycling and the Police. Most importantly, the Government have agreed to simplify the Cycle Tracks Regulations, making it easier for local authorities to turn suitable footpaths into cycle tracks.
