Comment by Andrew Abbess on March 23, 2012 at 11:46: The launch of The Times Cities Fit for Cycling Campaign has put the conditions for safe cycling onto the political agenda, and put the role of local authorities under the spotlight.

The local Govt information unit has produced a briefing update on the debate and an overview of the ways in which local authorities can contribute to safer cycling conditions in cities.

Comment by Andrew Abbess on February 22, 2012 at 11:34: Great News - I have just had an email form Stirling MP Ann McGuire who is supporting the "Cities Fit for Cycling campaign" She says:-

Cycling is good for improving health, helping the environment by cutting vehicle journeys and emissions and reduces congestion for those that need to drive. It cannot be right that people have to fear their friends and relatives getting on a bike, particularly in our cities. We have got to do more to prevent cyclists being killed or seriously injured on our roads and The Times is absolutely right to raise awareness and launch a campaign for cycle safety.

Despite the importance of cycling proficiency and awareness, we must never give the impression that the responsibility to prevent collisions simply rests with cyclists. That is why The Times is right to highlight the importance of measures such as improving road junctions, creating alternative cycle routes and improving safety equipment on HGVs. I have already signed Early Day Motion 2689, The Times' Cities Fit for Cycling Campaign, a link to which I attach, and hope to be able to attend tomorrow's Parliamentary debate on this issue. I will also be happy to pass your concerns onto my colleagues at Stirling Council as well as those in the Scottish Parliament.
